Books of 2013, #3: The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami

Once Toru Okada’s cat goes missing, his life begins to unravel. Colourful characters start stealing into his dreams, a mysterious voice on the phone seduces and argues with him, he meets a bizarre, morbid neighbour, and his wife vanishes. But these prove to be the least of Toru’s problems.

Murakami spins his usual effortless dreamworld and populates it with surreal images and characters that float around in it like jellyfish. Though I’ve only read three or four of his works, Chronicle shares a couple faults that I noticed in 1Q84: Murakami is an unapologetic rambler. The protagonist spends lengthy portions of the book wandering in a confused, purposeless state where nothing very significant happens. It’s okay (even useful) in small doses, and not nearly as egregious as 1Q84, but before the end of the story I was starting to lose faith.

Murakami also doesn’t mind having his characters vanish on a whim, or introducing entirely new central characters two thirds of the way in. It doesn’t feel so bad as 1Q84, with the Kano sisters popping up here and there near the end, but still makes for a certain awkwardness.

Speaking of the ending—it was thrilling, a great conclusion tying together perhaps not every mystery in the story, but enough to lift a solid plot out of a mess of ethereal themes.

A little too messy, I think, to be my favourite Murakami so far (which has to be Hardboiled Wonderland, with its non-everyman protagonist and lack of extraneous plot threads), but Chronicle is Murakami at his gorgeous, dreamy, thoughtful (almost) best.

So, I paint my nails pretty regularly these days. I also work as a barista/cashier pretty regularly these days. A few weeks back, I had a customer come in, a fairly typical, sheltered, suburban soccer mom, and she ordered a latte from me. She saw my brightly colored nails and said, “Wow, you’re so brave! My son asked me about painting his nails, and if it’s okay for boys to do that. Now I’ll tell him there’s a cool guy who does it too!” It was a nice moment, very cute.

Then, last week, she came in again, and said, “Hey, I’m so glad you’re here! I want you to meet someone!” She then brings her son forward, and says, “Okay sweetie, show him what you did!” And he throws his hands up, showing off his bright, sparkling blue nails. He shows them off, and I show mine off to him. He smiles. We fist bump.

Guys, I’ve only wanted to cry once at work before, and that was when someone ordered a large dry soy cappuccino on ice.

This time, though. This was a good cry.
