The fatter wog said to the skinnier wog: ‘Oi bro, you slept with my cousin’. And the other one said: ‘Nah man, I didn’t for shit, eh’ and the other one goes: ‘I will call on my fully sick boys, eh’. And then pulled out a gun and went: Chk-chk boom
Tell me how it's going with the play you're directing? (Or directed?)
Well it’s just that everything has gone pretty slowly. We only got the scripts a couple of weeks ago and had the read through last week. We only have like three full months to put this together, but I’m hoping that because the blocking and setting is very, very simple it’ll all come together.
Also people keep dropping out it’s the worst.
But I’m still excited and glad I’m getting to do this. I just hope it all works out.
The only people who aren’t benefiting from it are the fat cats up in Hollywood’s production studios. They’re making most of the money off of films. Not the artists behind the projects. The big time producers.
And, okay, when I want to see a painting done by, say, Pablo Picasso, I don’t have to pay Pablo Picasso every time I want to see an image of it, do I?
No, I can google “Guernica” and there it is. And I’m not doing anything wrong. I’m not claiming any rights to it. I’m not making any money off of it. I’m just viewing.
But…when I download a movie, which I am just viewing, not making any money off of or claiming any right to…suddenly that’s wrong?
Are films not art anymore? What makes them any different from downloading a picture of a painting onto my desktop, just to view?
The problem is, the MPAA and all these production companies who are pissed off about ~pirating aren’t seeing films as art anymore - they’re seeing them as a means of revenue. And as an aspiring filmmaker, that makes me very, very pissed off.
whoa hey nope.
"The only people who aren’t benefiting from it are the fat cats up in Hollywood’s production studios. They’re making most of the money off of films. Not the artists behind the projects."
I don’t know why you think this is true but I suspect it has something to do with your use of the term “fat cats”. Obviously an artist is not benefiting from you pirating a movie versus you paying for a movie. The difference is an artist receiving no money and an artist receiving some money.
And even the whole “oh but if I like something I pirate I’ll spread the word and go to the concert and see her next movie” argument is kinda weak. I do that, too, but with the vast majority of things I pirate and like, I watch or listen to it and then don’t really support in any way and I’m willing to bet a lot of people do the same.
The rest of your argument
I wish I lived in a world where all art was free and everything was good and pure
but that’s not going to happen even without dumb producers and the screwed up industry
today’s big studio films require millions of dollars to produce
the studios give directors and actors money to make the film because they think that they will receive a greater amount of money back when they release the film from customers who go to theatres and buy dvds
that is their incentive to hand out the money to make the movie possible
if everyone pirates the movie then the studio does not make enough money and are not encouraged to finance films by the same director, with the same actors, etc.
if everyone pirated harry potter and the philosopher’s stone when it came out, the studios wouldn’t make any money and they probably wouldn’t continue the franchise and rupert grint would be waiting tables somewhere
I’m sure you know all of this
you say you’re an aspiring filmmaker
if you make an indie movie and pour all your savings into it and people like it a lot but don’t pay you for making it what exactly do you expect to eat
I know the movie industry is fucked up in a lot of ways and the best way to support change is to support more independent artists and films but you also have to pay for those even if they are art
I get that it’s cool to be like “sopa sucks piracy 4ever I hate the man he’s always bringing us down” but
99% of the time piracy is detrimental to an artist’s success and that is everyone’s fault and there’s no point in trying to justify something that hurts your favourite artist just buy the goddamn dvd
