There are times when I found Buffy and Angel to be sort of tedious characters, but Mal was never once not a fascinating, calculating, angry-but-likeable sort of guy. An interesting, layered leader of an interesting, layered crew. Plus so badass; Dobson’s face anybody?
I mean Firefly was just about perfect in every way, but I think it’s because Buffy had a longer run that I feel more attached to its characters. Obviously there’s another edge to that sword (season seven, ugh) but these characters get to grow and develop in such a beautiful way (well, mostly beautiful—Spuffy, ugh) that makes it so compelling and memorable. If Firefly had gotten two seasons—or even one complete season—that probably would have been enough to give it the advantage, because really I love both. You look at season one Buffy and season Buffy and the change is astonishing. ramble ramble ramble
